源義家が奥州征伐に赴いた際、越辺川の増水にあってしまい進軍できず大宮住吉神社に祈願をしたところ戦勝を果たすことができたと言う伝説が残る。その際に、腰かけた塚から「塚の腰」、「塚越」の地名となった。
